There's only two male hair loss drugs clinically tested and FDA approved : Minoxidil (Rogaine and other brands) and Finasteride (Proscar, Propecia, etc.), there are some interesting drugs too like Dutasteride or Follica but there aren't enough studies yet.
If you're into natural stuff, the only one that might be helpful is Saw Palmeto (there are capsules for sale in natural shops) because it contains anti androgens similar to the ones found on Propecia.
Minoxidil if you buy generic brands it's quite cheap and Proscar if you get the generic version it's reasonably cheap and will last you a long time.
Quite frankly all the other stuff are either placebos or scams.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend an inexpensive but good shampoo or supplement (oil/etc) for thinning/falling hair. I'm into the natural stuff, so keep it real. Shampoo etc for hair loss/thinning?
My mother and brother use Biotin. You have to take it everyday and ofcourse over an extended period before you see results, but my mother has seen great results. My brother just started on it about a week ago so I can't report on his progress just yet :-)

I have yet to hear of a shampoo that's proven to prevent you from losing your hair. However, there's always Rogaine (or Minoxidil) that can be applied daily to prevent future hair loss and in some cases regrow lost hair.
I tried Rogaine years ago and didn't like it very much, mostly because I couldn't get dedicated to applying it everyday and made my head itch and peel like the Dickens. After years of suffering from male Pattern baldness I decided to go with a Bosley hair restoration procedure. Since receiving the hair transplant back in July I've blogged my results on BattleAgainstBald.com. In addition to real hair restoration results the blog provides a wealth of information on hair loss and the methods for correcting it.

2 bars castile soap, grated
1 ounce tincture of benzoin
3 egg yolks
2 ounces glycerin

Nioxin products are great, but if you've tried them and they didn't work for you, I'd suggest having an electrotherapy session at your nearest day spa. The High Frequency machine normally used in deep-treatment facials may help your scalp. Have your technician turn the frequency up to where it is uncomfortable but not so high as you absolutely can't stand it. The technician then ';bounces'; the argon-filled glass electrode over your scalp in a uniform pattern to clear any bacteria from just under the skin's surface. This may facilitate easier growth from your existing hair. My brother absolutely swears by this! Make sure you don't wear ANY metal jewelry and have no metal implants in your body (fillings in your teeth are okay, but will make an unpleasant taste in your mouth). Good luck!

Hi there, I'm 19 years old with a thick full head of hair (as every hair dresser tells me). I was told that the mothers side is the best to look at for hair information and my grandpa has decent amount of hair for someone that is 67(no uncles) so does my fathers side. I have always had a sensitive scalp and skin (needed to use non allergenic soaps and laundry detergent my whole life) and like an idiot after getting my haircut I purchased http://menshair.about.com/od/mensproductguide/gr/bedhead.htm (both the shampoo and conditioner) I thoroughly massaged this into my head and let it sit for a few minutes for about 2-3days in a row, I had an extremely irritated scalp- not really irritated but itchy and when i would wear a hat or hood etc it would be uncomfortable (crown area mostly) for about a day or 2, the irritation has since subsided however i still have a very slight itchiness when i touch the crown area or throw on a hat. I have also noticed some minor hair loss on my scalp area. I know that a reaction to shampoo can cause this so my question is: Will it return? It's very minor however I happen to have a double crown so it tends to stand out a little more now.
Additional info: when I run my hand through my hair in the shower i usually only lose about 4ish hairs and then none when i repeat this. I read that only about 3% of allergic reactions can cause scarring which will be permanent hair loss. I guess the best way to tell is to wait a month (i have extremely fast growing hair) however I figured I'd throw up a question here and see what comes back

Go to the drugstore and buy LOREAL EVERPURE,it is a new line by Loreal that is 100% SULFATE FREE.I'm sure in the next few years,all the companies will be coming out with SLS FREE products,as we are just now finding out just how BAD they are for some people.And the demand for SF will only rise as people get educated about it:-)
Start taking vitamins too,hair grows from the INSIDE of the body,not the ends...so unless you eat PERFECTLY,your diet is lacking and you need to supplemnet,get OMEGA COMPLEX,BIOTIN(2,500 mgs a day),and a B-COMPLEX,and a MULT VITAMIN.
If you don't improve...get a doctors appt,get a check up and your thyroid tested,a bad one can cause hair loss.Will hair loss due to Shampoo reaction grow back?
Your hair is doomed. I'm a DR. at UC DAVIS and I see this happening on a regular basis. You should look around online and find if their are any pending law suits that you can be apart of. From now on I recommend that you only use non antibacterial dish washing soap for shampoo. It is safe and will minimize any further hair loss.

I don't know about this actual shampoo, but I do know that garlic really does help grow back hair. My old roommate randomly got 3 bald spots in the back of his head...we don't know why. He just heard that garlic would help. So he actually took a garlic clove, cut it in half, and then rubbed the cut end on the spots at least once a day... It grew his hair back! I think it took maybe about 2 months. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen.

I was using Panteene Brunette Expressions for about 8 months,for the last 3 months my hair was falling out.I thougt it might be a mineral/Vitamin problem,
I then changed my shampoo and conditioner ,within the first wash i noticed a drop in the amout of hair that was coming out when i was washng my hair.
Since using this shampoo and Conditoner my hair has stopped falling out.

i know for sure that iron and vitamin B complex and vitamin E stopes hair loss wait 2 weeks to be amazed,second thing if your hair is oily and itchy thats scalp iritation do to stress so use any good shampo for oily hair like St.eves citrus wash daily and use a weekly dandruf wash to kill germs,but if you have dry hair drink lots of water and stay away of heat use scalp cooling treatment and soft shampos like panteen.

For the first time I've been using Redken shampoo and hair color. Since that, my hair has been falling out, or shedding pretty significantly.

This could be the case, but the only problem is that this didn't start happening until after I began using the redken products.

I started using Head %26amp; Shoulders shampoo last year. I've never had the problem you're describing; but a hair stylist told me once a little trick to avoid Dandruff plus get easy hair to work with that's soft; that's what I've been doing for over a year.
I shower every morning, but on Monday mornings I always use Head and Shoulders. The rest of the week I use regular shampoo. It keeps the dandruff away and my hair is perfect. One time I got a few flakes on the back of my jacket so I used Head %26amp; Shoulders on Tuesday and Wednsday and it went right away.
I highly suggest this method.
Plus; head and shoulders is a bit pricey, so it cuts down on the costs a bit. ;)

Personally i feel body shop conditioner is good for my hair. Shampoo...few of my friends said organics is good.but i have not given a try yet.
I have very long straight hair. I use biotin 1000 mg, coconut oil %26amp; Aveeno's new shampoo %26amp; conditioner. I leave the coconut oil in overnight then wash out in the morning. If that does not work for then leave in for ONE hour then wash it out. Do this at least once a week. I do it twice sometimes if I have a time three times. I have been using Aveen for the last month %26amp; a half %26amp; just love it. If you use the conditioner do not use the oil the same night or that morning for it will weigh your hair down. Well for one try using Mane N' Tail Horse Shampoo. I use it all the time and it makes your hair grow faster. You can find it at walmart in the pet section. also you should drink plenty of water to condition your hair and when shampooing and conditioning you should use cold or

I started using T-Gel medicated shampoo about 2 years ago as my exclusive daily shampoo. At the time I didn't exactly have long luxurious locks of hair but it has thinned dramatically since then. My dad didn't thin out until about 35, I'm only 25.

Before examining the most common causes of premature hair loss we need to understand that some shedding of hair is perfectly normal. Hairs grow from follicles that are tiny organs in the skin designed to grow a single hair that follows this repetitive cycle:
1. Lengthy growth period (Anagen Stage) - this phase usually lasts between two and seven years with an average growth rate of six inches (15cm) each year.
2. Short transition period (Catagen Stage) - this period of transition lasts for roughly two to four weeks. During this phase the hair shaft becomes detached and moves upwards within the follicle.
3. Resting period (Telogen Stage) - this phase lasts about three months allowing the hair to detach itself prior to falling out.
At this point a new hair begins to grow thus repeating the normal cycle of hair growth. Unfortunately a number of factors can interfere with the natural hair growth process leading to forms of hair thinning or premature baldness.
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss, probably accounting for as much as 95% of pattern hair loss for both men and women. It is usually associated with aging and develops in predictable stages over varying periods of time. Each follicle follows a genetically programmed growth cycle with some follicles coded to remain active for a shorter time than others. This results in the development of the hereditary baldness patterns that are so familiar to us all.
For this type of baldness to occur, the following factors must be present:
1. A genetic predisposition for hair loss to occur (as explained above).
2. The presence of male hormones.
3. Aging - in other words, enough time for the first two factors to exert an influence.
All men and women produce male hormones such as testosterone and DHT. These have a useful role to play in both sexes but obviously occur in widely differing concentrations. It is the higher levels of androgens found in males that explains why this form of hair loss affects men more than women.
In brief, these hormones affect the hair growth cycle as follows:
1. High levels of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme occur in some cells of the hair follicle and sebaceous glands.
2. 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into DHT.
3. DHT causes the terminal hairs to miniaturize.
4. This leaves short, soft, fluffy vellus hairs that provide inadequate scalp coverage.
5. The growth phases gradually become shorter until these hairs are lost for good.
Alopecia areata is thought to be an immune system disorder that causes follicles to stop producing hairs in patches on the head. In severe cases it can advance to the stage where all hair on the head is lost (alopecia totalis) or even a complete absence of body hair results (alopecia universalis).
In most cases the hair will reappear on its own but until then, the condition can be very distressing to sufferers particularly as its cause can be difficult to determine. If you feel you may be suffering from this form of hair loss, seek the advice of your physician who will carry out a physical examination and conduct blood tests to help determine the cause.
Telogen effluvium is characterized by a general thinning or shedding of hair over a period of months and is most commonly found in people who have recently experienced trauma. Common causes include childbirth, major surgery, severe illness, psychological stress and chemotherapy. Before examining the most common causes of premature hair loss we need to understand that some shedding of hair is perfectly normal. Hairs grow from follicles that are tiny organs in the skin designed to grow a single hair that follows this repetitive cycle:
1. Lengthy growth period (Anagen Stage) - this phase usually lasts between two and seven years with an average growth rate of six inches (15cm) each year.
2. Short transition period (Catagen Stage) - this period of transition lasts for roughly two to four weeks. During this phase the hair shaft becomes detached and moves upwards within the follicle.
3. Resting period (Telogen Stage) - this phase lasts about three months allowing the hair to detach itself prior to falling out.
At this point a new hair begins to grow thus repeating the normal cycle of hair growth. Unfortunately a number of factors can interfere with the natural hair growth process leading to forms of hair thinning or premature baldness.
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss, probably accounting for as much as 95% of pattern hair loss for both men and women. It is usually associated with aging and develops in predictable stages over varying periods of time. Each follicle follows a genetically programmed growth cycle with some follicles coded to remain active for a shorter time than others. This results in the development of the hereditary baldness patterns that are so familiar to us all.
For this type of baldness to occur, the following factors must be present:
1. A genetic predisposition for hair loss to occur (as explained above).
2. The presence of male hormones.
3. Aging - in other words, enough time for the first two factors to exert an influence.
All men and women produce male hormones such as testosterone and DHT. These have a useful role to play in both sexes but obviously occur in widely differing concentrations. It is the higher levels of androgens found in males that explains why this form of hair loss affects men more than women.
In brief, these hormones affect the hair growth cycle as follows:
1. High levels of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme occur in some cells of the hair follicle and sebaceous glands.
2. 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into DHT.
3. DHT causes the terminal hairs to miniaturize.
4. This leaves short, soft, fluffy vellus hairs that provide inadequate scalp coverage.
5. The growth phases gradually become shorter until these hairs are lost for good.
Alopecia areata is thought to be an immune system disorder that causes follicles to stop producing hairs in patches on the head. In severe cases it can advance to the stage where all hair on the head is lost (alopecia totalis) or even a complete absence of body hair results (alopecia universalis).
In most cases the hair will reappear on its own but until then, the condition can be very distressing to sufferers particularly as its cause can be difficult to determine. If you feel you may be suffering from this form of hair loss, seek the advice of your physician who will carry out a physical examination and conduct blood tests to help determine the cause.
Telogen effluvium is characterized by a general thinning or shedding of hair over a period of months and is most commonly found in people who have recently experienced trauma. Common causes include childbirth, major surgery, severe illness, psychological stress and chemotherapy. The good news is that the abnormal growth behavior associated with telogen effluvium is temporary and reversible.
There are numerous other less common hair loss causes that need to be discounted before a course of treatment is chosen. Traction alopecia is the loss of hair from constant pulling, usually as the result of hair styling. Broken hairs can result in thinning, often caused by excessive styling or exposure to chemicals and sun. Finally, severe illnesses or nutritional deficiencies can cause side effects that may include degrees of hair loss.
I hope this brief article has gotten across the message that diagnosing the real causes of hair loss is not always a straightforward process. I've had hair loss issues before in the past and what I noticed is that as long as I used shampoos that were sulfate free (no sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate ingredients) I didn't have as much hair clogging the drain everytime I showered.
I use organic and natural hair products that I buy from places like Whole Foods or other health stores. Even the supermarket Stop and Shop carries organic and natural products.

after a while mane and tail will actually start to build up and your hair will not feel very good, i would recomend a shampoo like Nioxin, you can find it at your local beauty supply store.
at Sally beauty supply they cary something similar called Nutri-Ox, which is exactly the same at a fraction of the price.

I do realize that guys are way more prone to lose hair than girls when they get older, but still, that's why conditioner is out there and they keep adding more and more stuff to it, like Vitamin E and Aloe, antioxidants, protein, anything that will repair hair, keep the shine, and I don't know what. I shampoo like once a week cuz I have really dry hair. I never condition my hair cuz I use a hair grease that is like half way between pomade and petroleum jelly. It might take awhile to see results. Typically I hear 2-6 months Everybody is different though. I 've tried HVT hair loss pills and got lots of peach fuzz hair. Still hair but not much dark. I used provillus for a few months. N it felt like it stopped it from gettin worse, but thats it The next 1 i'm trying is gunna b Follinex. 25 bucks with shipping. Or if u want try Formula 22 Same price. Hopefully some of this helps. I know what it's like. Im 25 n wanna stop it before It gets bad n theres no return. haha.
