It could be a skin condition, or it could be a type of mange. Some manges can be contagious, but some, like red mange, are not. Red mange is caused by a mite. It could also maybe be flea or insect bites, or allergies. I'd take the dog to the vet. They can usually treat whatever is the cause.What cause the hair loss of a dog?

The vet told me that my dog's hair loss around his tail was caused by his diet. I stopped feeding him table scraps %26amp; only gave him lamb %26amp; rice dog food. His coat improved but the hair never did grow back.
